Safety guidelines for fireworks

Purchasing fireworks comes with safety rules that must be followed to ensure safe use. A fireworks display carried out under the right conditions is always a memorable moment.

Fireworks are dangerous products and must be used with great care, especially in the presence of children, elderly people or animals.

Basic safety rules:

  • Fireworks must always be lit in an open area, on flat ground, and slightly secured into the ground to ensure a straight and safe launch.
  • Once the firework is correctly positioned, use the igniter provided in the assortment for lighting.
  • Avoid using matches or lighters, as they may burn too quickly and not allow enough time to move away to a minimum distance of 8 meters.
  • If ignition does not work, do not bend over the firework and wait at least 15 minutes before lighting the backup fuse.
  • Once the firework display is finished, wait at least 4 hours before approaching it.

Precautions to take before lighting your fireworks

Store your fireworks in a closed area, protected from moisture and out of reach of children.

We recommend reading all instructions for use and checking with your local municipality or the relevant police zone to find out whether fireworks displays are permitted and under what conditions.

In all cases, choose a clear, open area on firm and level ground (avoid slopes) to set off your fireworks. Stay as far away as possible from buildings, parked vehicles and vegetation.

10 safety rules to follow during a fireworks display

  1. Stay sober: no alcohol for the operator before or during the display
  2. Spectators must strictly keep a minimum distance of 8 m from the ignition point (see the firework instructions)
  3. Provide eye protection and have a fire extinguisher or water available
  4. Place each rocket in a vertical launch tube, firmly anchored in the ground to prevent movement
  5. Place fireworks cakes on flat ground and stabilize them, for example by surrounding them with heavy blocks
  6. Use the igniter provided in the assortments. Avoid matches or lighters: the fuse may burn too quickly
  7. Always light fireworks items individually, with your arm fully extended, and never lean over them
  8. As soon as a fuse is lit, move away immediately and keep a safe distance
  9. Never try to relight fireworks that have failed. It is recommended to wait at least 15 minutes before lighting the backup fuse (if present) and to wait 4 hours before approaching a spent firework.
  10. Immediately extinguish any glowing residues on the ground

Also protect your pets

Remember to place your pets in a safe location during the fireworks display. Dogs and horses are often frightened by the sound of explosions.

To reduce the risk of escape or even cardiac distress in older animals, you can close the shutters and turn on the lights, television or radio. There are also fireworks with reduced noise levels.

A few good actions to take in case of an accident

In case of a burn, run plenty of clean, cool water over the injury for at least 15 minutes.

Immediately call emergency services at 112 or go to the nearest burn center.
